Young-Chhaylee and Hannah Abrams at Chop Suey 21 November 2017
I think I could always be talked into catching a Young-Chhaylee show. His music is great and heartfelt. I know, that word - heartfelt - gets thrown around all the time, and if a musician's music isn't heartfelt, they should probably reassess. But the word works, and I'm sticking with it.
I saw his show on 21 November at Capitol Hill's Chop Suey. Hannah Abrams joined him. Hannah has a beautiful voice, and they make singing live music look like a lot of fun.
I'd go to their shows even if their music was bad (it's not, it's really good). Young-Chhaylee's almost always smiling, and he's honest onstage, offering brief insights into what he was thinking about or going through when he wrote a particular song. It's one of the nice things about seeing musicians at smaller venues. I also see him at his friends' shows, offering support or a helping hand with stage setup. (Most importantly, he told me he liked my photos.)
[Bummed that I couldn't make it for Sue Quigley and the Revelators set or stay for The Drifter Luke. Next time.]
